Residents in the City of Fremantle, Melville and the Town of East Fremantle will soon go from two bins to three when the Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) system is rolled out in the second half of 2019.
Commencing in October 2017, a 3-bin FOGO service was trialled to around 7,000 households in the City of Melville. The aim of the trial was to send less waste to landfill, produce a high-quality compost and reduce processing costs.
The trial process delivered great success, with diversion from landfill of around 65%, in line with the 2020 State Government Targets, and also received strong public support.
The system is different to other 3-bin systems that have been rolled out around Perth as it allows for all organic materials, including all food waste, to be placed into the lime green-lidded FOGO bin for composting.
By collecting nutrient-rich food waste alongside garden waste in the FOGO bin, we can generate a high-quality compost to use on farms, parks and gardens and avoid organic waste going to landfill which produces harmful methane gas.
